1. What services does the Counseling Center provide?

The Counseling Center offers a full range of counseling services to all currently-admitted students, at no charge. These services include individual counseling, group therapy, couples counseling, and the opportunity for outreach and consultation.

Walk-in intake/Crisis intervention
Whether you come to the Center in crisis or come for help with an on-going problem, you need no appointment.  After completing about twenty minutes worth of paperwork, you will see a counselor. He or she will aid you with any immediate crisis and will help you decide what you need in order to address ongoing concerns. If any of our other services are appropriate for you, the intake counselor will arrange them. If other University services or resources in the community are needed, the counselor will help identify them. If you wish, you may download the intake paperwork here, fill it out, and print it out and bring it in with you to your walk-in session.

Individual, group or couples counseling

If it is mutually decided during the intake session that additional sessions at the Counseling Center are needed, you will be assigned to a staff counselor for individual or couples counseling, offered an appointment with a group counseling leader, referred to a workshop within the Center and/or referred to the Student Health Services for consultation regarding medication.  You can expect that the counselor you see will be concerned about your issues and will be knowledgeable about what can help.  All of us are here because we are committed to assisting students.  You also can expect confidentiality; our records are not part of the University’s record system or part of the Student Health Services record system, and our staff members are bound by strict professional ethics regarding confidentiality.

Individual therapy

The Counseling Center provides individual counseling to currently-admitted UT students. Individual counseling is an opportunity to talk confidentially with a counselor about personal concerns and to facilitate personal growth. The counselor and client work together to define and discuss personal issues and to reach mutually agreed upon goals.

Couples Counseling

Problems that are centered around an ongoing relationship may need to be addressed in couples counseling. Services are offered to couples regardless of marital status and/or sexual orientation, as long as at least one of the partners is a current student. If both partners can not come to the Center during the Walk-In Clinic hours, it may be possible for one to come alone to set up couples therapy. If both partners are not available before five p.m., we will make an appropriate referral to services which offers evening hours.

Referrals to on-campus or off-campus services
Staff members at the Counseling Center are knowledgeable about resources available to students both on-campus and within the community.  If we are not able to meet your needs, if you are not a UT student, or if you just would rather see someone outside of the Counseling Center, we can help by making an appropriate referral.

Outreach & Consultation
Psychoeducational presentations, guest lectures and workshops are available for students, faculty and staff upon request.  The Counseling Center also offers professional consultation services to UT departments and organizations. (See Outreach & Consultation section of our website for more information on these services).

Psychoeducational Workshops & Courses
The Center offers a variety of workshops and courses that students can attend.  Three one-credit hour courses are offered by the Center during the fall and spring semester. These credit courses include How to Study, Stress Management and Seminar on Personal Relationships.  We also offer workshops on relationship skills coping skills, and CBT skills for coping with depression and anxiety.  (See the Workshops section of our website for more information on and the times of our workshops).

3. What groups are available this spring?

The Counseling Center is offering eight groups in Spring 2009:  five General Therapy groups, including one for graduate students only, substance use management group, group for survivors of interpersonal violence, and coping skills group. Students interested in joining a group can find out more information and get set up for a group screening appointment by coming in to the Center during our walk-in hours (M-F 10:00 – 11:30 and 1:00 – 3:30).

The General Therapy Groups tend to focus on relationships, intimacy, boundaries, self-awareness and other components of interpersonal process. It also provides an opportunity to practice new behaviors within a safe, confidential, and supportive environment where group members learn to interact in a more honest, genuine, and confident manner.  This group is beneficial for those with issues of intimacy, depression, anxiety, family of origin issues or those, who wish to develop deeper interpersonal relationships.

Groups meet once a week for 1.5 hrs.  You can choose one of the following:
Mondays 2.30 -4.00 p.m.
Tuesdays 5.00 -6.30 p.m.
Wednesday 3.30 -5.00 p.m.
Thursday 3.30 -5.00 p.m.
Tuesdays 5.00-6.30 (graduate students only)

We may add another group at a different time if there is enough interest

Substance Use Management Group. The Substance Use Management group uses a harm reduction approach to assist participants in finding ways to reduce or eliminate problems related to their substance use. Participants are encouraged to examine their current use and related problems such as missing class, poor academic performance, or relationship problems and to develop plans for modifying their substance use in order to address these problems. Interested participants will meet with a group facilitator for an individual screening session prior to starting the group.

Group meets on Thursdays from 3.30 to 5.00 and is open to new participants throughout the semester

Reclaiming Our Voices Group. This group is for women, who survived interpersonal violence, including but not limited to childhood sexual, physical, and emotional abuse, sexual assault, stalking, and relationship violence. It is a weekly support/therapy group that utilizes education, creative expression, playful movement, discussion, and ritual to help members move forward in their individual healing and growth.

Group meets on Wednesdays 3.45 – 5.15. This semester’s group is closed already.  But it will be running again in Fall 2009 and Spring 2010 semesters at the same time.

Coping Skills Group. A group that helps individuals cope with stress related to school, relationships, finances, and other life pressures.  Group  meetings are spent giving and recieving support as well as learning coping skills that will help reduce stress, anxiety, and improve overall functioning (e.g. relaxation, time management, sleep hygine, self care, assertivness).

Meeting time: TBD– open to new participants

We are open to adding new groups per students’ requests. So, if you are interested in any of the aforementioned groups or have suggestions for  new ones, please, call 974-2196 or come to the counseling center during walk-in hours.

4. What if I want to seek counseling somewhere else? Can you help me with that?

Yes.  One of the services we offer is providing referrals to outside counselors and/or agencies.  If you would like a referral, you can go through the walk-in/intake procedure, and your intake counselor will work with you to identify some appropriate referrals.
